It is formed by the reaction of ethylene and oxygen at 200–300 °C. It is used in mixtures with inert gases, CO2 and halocarbons so that it does not become flammable when mixed with air.
Ethylene oxide mixed with CO2 is used for sterilizing all kinds of medical supplies (syringes, surgical threads, surgical materials, gowns, drapes, etc.).
